Brains Are Automatic, But People Are Free

Michael Gazzaniga, one of the world's leading researchers in cognitive neuroscience, describes the mystery of free will: “If you think about it this way, if you are a Martian coming by earth and looking at all these humans and then looking at how they work you wouldn’t—it would never dawn on you to say, ‘Well, now, this thing needs free will!’ What are you talking about?”

I am getting closer to understanding how consciousness really works. Hopefully soon, I will be able to write it down.  I believe my theory was validated on one of Charlies Rose's programs on "the mind series."  during the periods of high consciousness, an entire network of neurons fire at once creating the emergent property of thinking or high consciousness.

Most of our conscious experience is automatic or a property of the subconsiousness mind.  Reading, writing, singing, doing mathematics, playing basketball, reacting, driving, guessing, and so on.  These activities are automatic and do not require thinking or high consciousness.

Most of the time we are not in a state of "high consciousness," but rather in automatic mode. In fact many people, perhaps more than 50% of people never experience a period of high consciousness.  Their brains are not powerful enough, or mature enough, or wired sufficiently, or smart enough to produce a state of high, thinking, creative comprehending consciousness.

As a result of my own personal introspection, i am surely convinced that I excersize free will, and have bursts of high thinking creative comprehending consciousness.

hopefully the loons are long gone; but I did see a few in nyc, see next email. joe

the ice plates on lake sunapee have been in action for about 6 weeks.  this is the first time in 20 years that I have observed this phenomenon in such detail.

the ice sheet is at least a foot thick and cars have been seen on the lake.  the warm weather and rain a few weeks back flattened the surface of the lack to an ice sheet.  in fact, today (2/12/2012) folks were ice sailing at dangerous speeds near bemis point; remember a few years back when two brothers crashed into each other, killing at least one of them.
but,  the plates continue churn, groan, crack and occasionally produce a loud boom. I estimate the ice/snow mountains to be about 48 inches high at certain points along the rift. after applying an actuarial extrapolation to 20,000' mount mckinley, I estimate that we should have big booms, (quakes) around mckinley every 15 years or so.

WHO'S GREEDY? Obama Gave 1% to Charity, Romney Gave 15%

Mitt Romney gave millions to charity. Joe Biden gave $369.

AP File

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave $10,772 of the $1.2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1 percent, according to tax returns for those years released today by his campaign.

The Obamas increased the amount they gave to charity when their income rose in 2005 and 2006 after the Illinois senator published a bestselling book. The $137,622 they gave over those two years amounted to more than 5 percent of their $2.6 million income.

Romney charitable contributions

Tax year    Taxable income          Charitable donations Donations as % of income
2010           $21.7 million                 $2.98 million                13.73%
2011 (est)   $20.9 million                $4 million                     19.14%
