VENERATION OF ESSENCE Joel Ash

What makes New Hampshire so great?

This place that I so venerate;

   One poet's perspective,

   On essence reflective,

Subjective true view of this state.

Four seasons - - I treasure each one,

In summer outdoor life and fun;

   Fall leaves orange red,

   Winter snow white instead,

Wondrous springtime renewal begun.

So far from the populous press,

Away from the noise, crowds, and stress;

   Here amongst mountains,

   Midst cascading fountains,

A landscape the sun doth caress.

The culture of earlier times,

Reduction of outrageous crimes;

   Days freer and proud,

   Less raucous, less loud,

The verses of life with sweet rhymes.

 With places that folks come to see,

To sit underneath a shade tree;

   To meld with it all,

   To hear nature's call,

All this and to be fancy free.

And here is the last but not least,

Like a temple that draws the high priest;

   The college, the green,

   Dartmouth friends often seen,

Loving ties that have never decreased.
