Drexel EMS Wins Student Organization of the Year

May 30, 2013 — Drexel EMS wins Student Organization of the Year Drexel Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was awarded Student Organization of the Year by Drexel University Student Affairs on May 16 in Behrakis Grand Hall. This award is presented to a recognized student organization that has shown outstanding commitment to its organizational goals, has made an impact in the Drexel community, and that has excelled in program planning, financial management, and leadership development.

Drexel EMS is a volunteer student organization which provides emergency medical care to Drexel University's campus and the immediate community. The group is led by EMS Chief Allison Brophy, a pre-junior in the BSN Co-op Program, and is made up of 32 members with varying majors including Nursing, Health Sciences and Pre-Physician Assistant. The group was officially recognized on campus in 2010 after two years of rigorous proposals and efforts.

“Being acknowledged as this year’s Student Organization of the Year was by far my proudest and most gratifying experience here at Drexel,” Brophy said. “So much hard work and time was put into strengthening our organization since its birth in 2010, and too frequently the sacrifices and dedication put forth by our members goes unnoticed. The impact our students make on campus is invaluable.”

The majority of the group’s members are Pennsylvania Department of Health certified Emergency Medical Technicians, but the group is also accepting new members with first responder or CPR certifications who are looking to further their training. Drexel EMS is certified with the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a quick response service (QRS), rendering quick, stabilizing aid, from the time they receive a call to the time a Philadelphia Fire Department unit arrives. While the team does not yet have the personnel or certification to transport patients to the hospital, they provide the same level care as any Philadelphia Fire Department Basic Life Support (BLS) Unit.

According to Brophy, Drexel EMS’s average response time to a campus/community medical emergency is less than 3.6 minutes. “In comparison to that of the Philadelphia Fire Department’s of 18.5 minutes, this is huge. In the event of a serious medical emergency such as a trauma, cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, those extra minutes can cost someone’s life,” she said.

Drexel EMS works closely with the Drexel University Department of Public Safety and Police and receives advising from their Medical Command as well their faculty advisor, the Director of Fire and Life Safety.

The team operates Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 7p.m. until 7a.m. In addition to the regularly scheduled shifts, Drexel EMS provides standby service upon request for events on campus such as Spring Jam, concerts, sporting events, and Greek Week events. The team provides standby coverage free of charge for all student organizations on campus and can be hired by University departments at a fixed rate.
