Mitchell Family

The four Mitchell Brothers from Chicago were beget by William Mitchell (Cloughboley, Sligo) & Bridie Keane (Listowel, Kerry). The Keane ancestry (covered elsewhere on this site) includes Bishops, Jesuits, Governors of Territories and other intellectuals including playwright Sir Thomas Moore.

William Mitchell (the senior) was one of 10 children, many of whom migrated to the USA; a large family indeed, and getting larger every year. William (the senior) had high standards and a strong work ethic and was known as "the honest cop." He and Bridie raised the sons to be leaders in their respective fields of endeavor. William (the senior)'s parents were Charles Mhor Mitchell and Catherine Cairns (Kearns or Kerins) who were poor farmers in Clogcar, Sligo during the times of the famines.

Charles Mhor, (pronounced Shar-less More) was a big man with an engaging persona and a quick wit and a long stride. He could be seen a mile away, strutting with his walking stick, and pipe in hand. The nickname "mhor" is a gaelic word for Big or Great. Charles and his older brother Thomas Charles who was much smaller in stature were beget by Charles Mitchell and Sarah Mhor Gilmarten (Kilmartin). Sarah was born in a nearby Ahamlish Parish where there was a large contingent of Gilmartins.

Charles Mitchell (the senior) was one of seven children of Thomas Mitchell and Sarah Mannion, both from the Mauherow area of Sligo.

Thomas Mitchell and his brother Owen Ruagh were beget by Owen Ruagh (the Red) Mitchell and Hannah Mannion (a cousin of Sarah Mannion).

Owen was the only known child (at this reckoning) of Michael Mitchell O'Maoilmhichil and Maria O'Donnell, both of whom were born in Lietrim and migrated to Connaught ("to Connaught or Hell") during the times of the troubles between the O'Donnells and the O'Neills in the early 1700s. O'Maoilmhichil is the Sept name for the family name Mitchell.

Michael Mitchell O'Maoilmhichil was beget by Owen Mitchell O'Maoilmhichil and Sheilagh O'Donnell in Lietrim near the close of the 1600s. Owen Mitchell O'Maoilmhichil was a hereditary animal husbandsman for the O'Donnells. He and Sheilagh and their eight children (Michael, Owen, Charles, Padraig, John, Terrence, Hannah and Catherine) left Lietrim for Connaught, during the troubles.

Owen Mitchell O'Maoilmhichil was a descendant of Maoilmhichil Naill, who was brother of Ona the Arch Druid circa 400AD. As shown in the archives, they were great grandsons of High King Naill Noigiallach
